Programma Ponte                                                               Scholarship Program

                                                                                                                                    

July 5 - July 31, 2004

A Four-week program of study in Rome, Italy offering                                              the following courses 

Contemporary Italy and European Institutions: (in English)                                  45 hours, 3 credits. The course consists of an in-depth analysis of                                 Italian political, social and economic institutions since the formation                                    of the Republic in 1948, and an examination of Italy's important roles                                 in the European Union and in global affairs. Italy's relationship with the                           United States and a comparison of political, economic and social realities                           are also examined in depth. On site visits to Italian and European                        governmental institutions and economic enterprises provide students with 

direct knowledge of their operations.

Italian History and Civilization: (in English) 45 hours,                                                  3 credits.The course traces the development of Italian civilization                                       from the founding of Rome in 753 BC to the establishment of the                                Republic in 1948. It includes an examination of major historical and          cultural movements highlighted by on-site visits to related archeological                             sites, museums and important historic monuments.

SPONSORS                                                                                                                   The Programma Ponte, now in its eighth year, is a collaborative                                           initiative, sponsored by the Association of Italian American Educators                   (AIAE); the Fraternized Nazionale dei Cavalieri del Lavoro (FNCL)                          and the Istituto Superiore per la Comunicazione e l'Opinione Pubblica             (ISCOP), associated with the Department of Social Sciences of the                         Pontifical University St. Thomas Aquinas, Rome, Italy.

Ten to fifteen scholarships will be awarded in 2004.

RELATED EXPENSES                                                                                                  The Programma Ponte scholarship includes all tuition fees, and                                      room and board at the residenza of the Cavalieri del Lavoro in                                         the vicinity of Cinecitta'. It does not include round trip airfare nor                               personal pocket money. Although students are selected in New York City,                         the scholarships begin in Rome on the first day of class and end upon                     satisfactory completion of the course work.

ELIGIBILITY                                                                                                                The applicant must be 18-23 years of age, a student in good                                      standing at an accredited 4 year college or university, from any                                     major discipline, with a GPA of 3.5 or above. He/she must have                                     one  parent or grandparent of Italian ancestry and possess good                          comprehension of the Italian language, either by giving evidence                                         of having taken one advanced course in Italian, or by demonstrating                                some fluency in the language during the interview process.

N.B. Please note that a scholarship recipient must complete the                                     two above mentioned courses whether or not his/her college or                                      university will accept a transfer of credit. It is recommended                                     that the students obtain the approval form the Registrar/Summer                                  School Abroad Office BEFORE BEGINNING the application process.

DEADLINE: The complete application with required documents                                        must be posted no later than FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 2004. INTERVIEW: The potential candidate will be invited to an                                      interview to take place in New York City on a Saturday in                                             early March 2004. The interview is mandatory, as it is critical                                           to the evaluation process. The Completed application form must be forwarded with                                     (1) an updated transcript (2) a curriculum vitae                                                   (3) two letters of recommendation, one of the two from a                                college or university professor 4) two pictures (face only) and                              (5) an essay of no less than 500 words in English or Italian                                  that  includes a brief biography and the  motivation                                              for applying for this scholarship.
